2011 OSCARS: Sound Mixing, Sound Editing

I promise to you, my dear readers, we will soon get to the categories with more recognizable names, like Kidman, Bening, Firth and Bale. But before then, let’s give credit where credit is due.

Here are the categories of Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing.

BEST SOUND MIXING

  • Inception — Lora Hirschberg, Gary A. Rizzo and Ed Novick
  • The King’s Speech — Paul Hamblin, Martin Jensen and John Midgley
  • Salt — Jeffrey J. Haboush, Greg P. Russell, Scott Millan and William Sarokin
  • The Social Network — Ren Klyce, David Parker, Michael Semanick and Mark Weingarten
  • True Grit — Skip Lievsay, Craig Berkey, Greg Orloff and Peter F. Kurland

Thoughts: Well, although I’m unsure of all the technicalities that go into mixing the sound of a film, I think it’s quite easy to find merit in this category. If a movie sounds well, then these people must be doing the quality work.

BEST SOUND EDITING

  • Inception — Richard King
  • Toy Story 3 — Tom Myers and Michael Silvers
  • Tron: Legacy — Gwendolyn Yates Whittle and Addison Teague
  • True Grit — Skip Lievsay and Craig Berkey
  • Unstoppable — Mark P. Stoeckinger

Thoughts: I’m unsure of what the intricate differences are between sound editing and sound mixing. I do know that some of the same names are nominated in both categories, so there must be some overlap. Also, these nominees seem more solitary, while sound mixing seems more collaborative with many names. Either way, I’m judging them by overall sound quality.
