NEWS: Spend some Halloween time at the Lafayette in Suffern

SUFFERN, N.Y. — The historic Lafayette Theatre is a gem of a movie palace that needs to be experienced at least once in life. Located approximately one hour from New York City, in Suffern, New York, the theater plays new movies (currently Halloween) and some revivals, including a Friday night series in the month of October dedicated to the horror genre.

The Lafayette has already played the original Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Night of the Living Dead. They finish the series with a Friday, Oct. 26 screening of The Shining at 10 p.m. Best of all, the screening will be a DCP copy of the film. (The little ones can enjoy a Saturday, Oct. 27 screening of The Witches as well.)

This reviewer recently enjoyed A Nightmare on Elm Street with nearly 75 other attendees at the Lafayette, and the experience was nostalgic goodness. The horror screenings occur at 10 p.m., so the crowd was in the mood for some nighttime scares. Freddy Krueger, iconically portrayed by Robert Englund, did not disappoint.

The Wes Craven film is bonafide classic, sitting near the top of the horror ladder with the likes of Friday the 13th, Halloween, The Exorcist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Sure, it’s no longer that scary, especially for those in attendance who were seeing it for the umpteenth time, but Freddy still packs a horror-filled wallop for newcomers.

It’s essentially required of any cinephile to enjoy a horror movie or two in the month of October, and the Lafayette serves as a perfect setting for frightening fare. Stop by Oct. 26 for The Shining. It won’t be all work and no play, and no dull boys are allowed.
