Shallow Side, a rock band originally from Cullman, Alabama, recently released their new single “You’re the Reason,” and they have an ongoing tour that will soon take them to Brat Fest in Madison, Wisconsin; Rival House at Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota; and The WC Social Club in Chicago. The band consists of Eric Boatright, Heath Fields, Sam Bower and Codey Red.
“You’re the Reason” is the second single off a new album, which is set for release later this year, according to press notes. The other song was the well-received tune “The Worst Kind.”
Recently Boatright exchanged emails with Hollywood Soapbox about their new song. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.
What do you love about the new single “You’re the Reason”?
This latest single is the evolving story for the upcoming album. As we started firstly with “The Worst Kind,” I was able to open up a bit about people and my personal interactions. There was a point in my music career that I really felt like I can’t do this. It’s not for me, but those words weren’t from me nor for me. They were from someone else telling me what they thought. And I let it get to me. This song allowed me to say it’s not me, it’s you.
Were you amazed by the success of “Can You Hear Me” from a few years ago?
I’m always amazed to see an idea that came from a small dark room be played in the lights and on radio. That will never get old.
What’s the music scene like in Alabama?
The music scene down here in the South is delicious, filled with professionals and semi-pros alike. Bar to bar, venue to venue, stadium to stadium, music may be a universal language, but in the South it’s our love language. And we make some love!
