Remember Jones is one of New Jersey’s best success stories. The Garden State native is now a successful singer, theater performer, bandleader and recording artist, but he never forgets where he came from. Evidence of this last point? Jones has returned to one of his artistic homes, the Axelrod Performing Arts Center in Deal Park, New Jersey, for an early-summer run of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita. In the show, he portrays the important character of Che, starring opposite Gaby Albo in the title role.

Jones’ biography is extensive and includes numerous highlights. He has shared the stage with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny and George Clinton, among many others, and he has released crowd-supported albums, including Ladies and Gentlemen, Remember Jones! and Tranquilizer! His most recent recording is HAHA, BITCH!

Recently Jones exchanged emails with Hollywood Soapbox to talk about his time in Evita and what it’s like performing at the Axelrod. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.

What do you love about this iconic musical and this particular role?

I’ve always been influenced by rock/soul music and the feeling of live theatre. After discovering rock operas like Tommy and Jesus Christ Superstar, the density and complexity of Evita and a role like Che always intrigued me. As a storyteller, something I find great strength in being, Che’s commentary and narration always called to and came naturally to me.

How challenging is the show?

In this production, I don’t leave the stage. I’m the first and final line, and weave the story together for two hours. The role is vocally challenging, with alternating moments of sweet sincerity and furious aggression, but keeping it all in control for the entirety of the show, as there’s always a light on me, is probably the most challenging.

Is the Axelrod PAC a good professional home? What’s the experience like working there?

The Axelrod, its artistic director and board, have given me many opportunities to showcase my artistic ability over the years. Many of my fans have told me that they love the intimacy of the venue.

What’s it like to work with Gaby Albo?

When doing a show like this, with two co-stars anchoring the stage, you dream for a partner that will be equally as focused and supportive. Gaby Albo is just that. This is an incredible role for her, and she handles it with grace. I’ve been telling people, if seeing me play Che in Evita isn’t for you, please come see Gaby as Eva.

Was New Jersey a cool place to grow up as a performer? Did you feel supported?

I often say there’s nothing like live theatre, but there’s also nothing like New Jersey, particularly Monmouth County, for its enthusiasm for the arts and the opportunities for an artist to grow. It really is one of a kind, and I’m very fortunate for what I’ve been able to grow and how I’ve been able to connect with people.
