Chris Savino’s The Loud House has turned into a top animated show on Nickelodeon, and now audiences can follow the adventures of 11-year-old Lincoln in a new graphic novel named The Loud House: There Will Be Chaos.

Fans who want an early preview of the graphic novel can check out a special sneak peek Saturday, May 6 during Free Comic Book Day, happening in comic book stores around the United States. The preview is part of the Papercutz Free Comic Book Day Issue. The full graphic novel will be released Tuesday, May 9 in bookstores and May 17 in comic book shops.

Savino contributes to the graphic novel with both artwork and stories about Lincoln and his misadventures living in a house with 10 sisters.

Recently, Hollywood Soapbox exchanged emails with Savino about the new project. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.

What motivated you to bring The Loud House to comic book and graphic novel form?

I had always wanted to be a comic strip artist as a kid. (I still do). My love for comic strips can be seen as a major influence in the design of The Loud House. So when Papercutz came to us with the idea of doing a Loud House graphic novel, I jumped at the chance. I felt with the comic strip aesthetic of The Loud House it would translate very nicely into the comic book form. It also gave us an outlet for some story ideas we had for the series that we just couldn’t turn into an episode.

What can fans expect from The Loud House: There Will Be Chaos and its Free Comic Book Day preview?

Fans will get a fun extension of The Loud House. They will get stories that come from every character’s point of view, not just Lincoln’s. Also, since this first volume was written and drawn solely by the artists and writers of the series, hopefully fans will get a sense of the different styles of each individual artist and writer. I think that’s what I would like most as well!

Did you grow up enjoying comic books?

Having older siblings, there were always comics around the house. Typically they were funny animal comics, which I love, as well as satire magazines like Mad, Cracked and Crazy. Before I had any money of my own, I relied on the daily and Sunday comic sections of the newspaper, but when I started making money of my own, I found myself buying the same types of funny animal comics and Mad magazine. I still do to this day.

The Loud House has become so successful on TV. What do you think are the qualities that keep driving fans to the show?

It’s such a wonderful thing that the show has gotten the kind of traction it has. I’m thrilled and honored and relieved all at once. I think that because the characters are human and face relatable problems that it helps to connect the audience with the show more. We really try to keep the show as authentic and honest as we can. A lot of the stories are sparked from things we experienced in our own childhoods. It’s quite possible that timing has everything to do with it. Perhaps The Loud House comes at a time when the audience was looking for characters that were more like themselves and, rather than an escape from life, they were looking for a show that reflected themselves.
