Dystopica, a five-piece metal band fronted by singer Becky Brideau, recently released its first full-length album, courtesy of Pavement Entertainment. The recording is called Infinite Reflection and features such songs as “Images Reflecting Within,” “Revenge,” “Awaken” and the album closer, “Blackout.”

There are many words that can describe Dystopica’s unique sound. They fit nicely under the overall metal umbrella, but a press release also point listeners in the direction of thrash metal and progressive metal. They are heavy and aggressive, and both those adjectives are on full display in the music videos for “The Dent In My Life,” “Blackout” and “Far From Perfect.”

Recently Brideau exchanged emails with Hollywood Soapbox to introduce the band and its new album. Joining her in the group are Rob Muller on guitar and Erich Bender on drums. Lucas Dellaporta (bass) and Connor Sperry (guitar) tour with Dystopica as well. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.

What can music fans expect on your first full-length album, Infinite Reflection?

Music fans can expect an album that is heavy, melodic and progressive with harmonized guitar riffs, guitar solos, female vocals and a diversified tracklist. Infinite Reflection is about reflecting on the past, taking hold of the present and redefining the future. Each song on the album is very distinct from one another, but together they tell a story of evolving through time. The album combines various subgenres of metal such as classic heavy metal, thrash metal, progressive metal, and even neo-classical, symphonic metal and death metal.

Some have called you metal. Others say thrash, and others say progressive. How do you define your sound?

If I were to choose one genre to label our sound I would just say metal because our sound is a blend of various metal subgenres. I describe our sound as a mix of heavy metal, hard rock, thrash metal and progressive metal. We are heavily inspired by classical heavy metal and bring back qualities of both classic heavy metal and thrash metal, including dual guitar riffs and guitar solos in each song. Our music is also progressive and incorporates modern metal elements as well.

What did day one of the band look like in 2019?

Day one of Dystopica was me determined on forming a metal band and writing the score for the first song we ever recorded, “Broken.”

What are you hoping for from the new album? Gather more fans around the United States and beyond?

We hope this album introduces more people from the United States as well as globally to our music. Thanks to social media, we can reach people from around the world and have built up an awesome fan base. We look forward to playing more shows to support the album and hope to travel more, playing places that we haven’t played before.

What inspired the song “The Dent in My Life”?

“The Dent In My Life” represents a period where I was not living my life the way I wanted. Since the album as a whole has to do with time and evolving, I think this track fits nicely. This is the only song I wrote so far that originally I was not going to write. When I first thought of this song in my head, I thought that it didn’t fit the sound of the band and did not want to write it. After being stuck in my head for years, I decided to write it, and I am happy I did because I love the way it came out.

What’s it like working with Pavement Entertainment?

It has been great working with Pavement Entertainment. The whole team is very supportive, responsive and wants what is best for the band. They provide services and support to help upcoming bands/musicians be heard.
