BEEA, an up-and-coming alternative rocker from Lisbon, has released her debut EP, called Paranoia, a recording that builds on her musical success in Portugal.

The title track is reminiscent of Tonight Alive, Halsey, PVRIS and Against the Current, according to press notes, combining an infectious melody with catchy lyrics. “Paranoia” follows on the heels of her 2019 single, “Sinking.” Both tunes are on the new EP, including “Ice,” “Better Off” and “All I Wanted.” Together, these songs are starting to get BEEA’s name out in Portugal and now the rest of the world.

The singer, whose real name is Beatriz Hilario, made the recording at Alias Studios in Paris. Recently Hollywood Soapbox exchanged emails with BEEA about her new song and new EP. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.

What inspired the song “Paranoia”?

‘Paranoia’ is about the darkest period of my life. I went through a toxic relationship and felt the need to write a whole EP about it (that’s why I decided to name it Paranoia as well).

Like the name suggests, I was feeling extremely paranoid and obsessed with the person I was with. I wrote ‘Paranoia’ as a reminder to never put anyone else above everything in my life and to help me get the closure I needed.

How excited are you to have Paranoia the EP released for your fans?

Beyond excited! So far the feedback has been incredible, and everyone has been so nice to me, especially when someone tells me they relate to my lyrics and songs. That’s the biggest compliment anyone can give me.

Is there a strong alternative rock scene in Lisbon?

Not really. We have a huge metal community, but when it comes to alternative rock/pop punk the scene is pretty small. I travel a lot to see my favorite bands play, even though we have been getting more shows each year. I’ve seen a small growth over the past few years and noticed that there’s a lot of younger people starting to come, which is very good sign!

Who were some of your musical influences growing up?

I pretty much blame Avril Lavigne and Disney for making me sing at a very young age. I also grew up listening to a lot of Blink 182, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Sum 41 and My Chemical Romance.

What’s the origin of the name BEEA?

My real name is Beatriz, and everyone calls me Bea. I just added an extra ‘e’ to make it stand out more.

What’s the future look like for you and your music?

I just played my first international show a few days ago in Paris, and my heart is so full with love and hope at the moment. I also shot a new music video for an upcoming single and recorded a few covers. … There’s a lot of new stuff coming this year, and I’ve been working a lot! I hope I get the chance to play a few more shows outside Portugal and spread my music with as many people as I can.
