INTERVIEW: Andrew Durand, of ‘Head Over Heels,’ heads to ‘Loveville High’

Loveville High is a musical podcast that tracks several stories at a high school prom in Loveville, Ohio. The narrative plays out over nine episodes, and the seventh installment stars Andrew Durand, recently of Broadway’s Head Over Heels and currently of Ink.
On the podcast, Durand plays Seth, a nervous guy who is hanging out under a food table in the gym, eternally hiding from the girl he has been obsessing over. Joining him, and willing to hear his story, is Madison (Kathryn Allison of Aladdin).
The project is the brainchild of David Zellnik, who wrote the book and lyrics, and Eric Svejcar, who wrote the music. Recently Hollywood Soapbox exchanged emails with Durand about the podcast. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.
What attracted you to join the Loveville High podcast?
David Zellnik asked! We worked together years back on Yank! I enjoy David very much both as a person and writer, so I was very happy to hear from him.
What was it like performing on the podcast and audio acting?
‘Audio acting’ was an interesting challenge. In theater we get to work using our bodies and physical nuance to express a lot of what is happening in a scene. It was fun to play around with how to capture those moments using just your voice.
Do you have fond memories of your own prom?
I think I tried escargot for the first time at the dinner before my prom. So, that’s a weird memory.
How was the experience performing in Broadway’s Head Over Heels?
Head Over Heels was the most amazing experience. It’s hard to put into words. Getting to create that role, and live in that world for a while brought me unbridled joy.
What are you most excited about performing in Ink on Broadway?
The most exciting thing about Ink is that people aren’t gonna know what hit them. It is so incredibly unexpected and relevant.
