INTERVIEW: 1910 Fruitgum Company ready to rock NJ’s State Theatre at 60s spectacular
The State Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey, will play host to a springtime 1960s spectacular Saturday, April 29. On the bill are Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone, BJ Thomas, Dennis Tufano and the 1910 Fruitgum Company.
That’s a lot of star power, and the bands promise to offer an evening of nostalgic hits and fond memories. Audiences can expect such songs as “I’m Into Something Good,” “I’m Henry the Eighth, I Am,” “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head,” “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” “Kind of a Drag” and “Simon Says.”
Recently, Hollywood Soapbox exchanged emails with Mick Mansuetto of the 1910 Fruitgum Company, a band famous for “Simon Says” and “1, 2, 3, Red Light,” among other hits. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.
What’s your favorite aspect of touring with the 1910 Fruitgum Company?
The thing I like most about touring with my group is the opportunity to meet all of the many fans from all over the country. It is really nice to hear from them up close.
Do you like when the audience sings along to the well-known hits?
That is one of the best things that could happen. We encourage them to sing along, and most of the time they do.
Why do you think the 1910 Fruitgum Company’s songs have found such success with fans?
I think that the audience enjoys the memories the songs bring back. All of our shows [are] upbeat and make them want to get up and dance. I like when fans tell us where they were when they first heard our songs.
When did you first get into music?
I first got into music when I was 15 years old singing on the street corner.
Why does New Jersey pump out so many quality musicians?
Talented artists come from every corner of the globe, and New Jersey has had a good share of the successful ones. I think that the tri-state area has had so many greats because of the availability of local songwriters who wrote the hits and the availability of the studios and record companies in the New York area.
You have Broadway, Juilliard and other facilities that contribute to the artists’ success.
