Animal Planet’s newest wildlife show takes a unique look at the vast diversity of the ocean. Marine life, in all its odd splendor, jumps off the screen in Wild Deep, which airs Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. From coral to cuttlefish, there’s a little something (or a big something) for everyone.

Recently Hollywood Soapbox exchanged emails with series producer Krishna San Nicolas about her experience on the show.

Is it challenging to find new angles to showcase the ocean on television?

Yes, it’s definitely a challenge to create stimulating programs that are focused on oceans and are almost entirely underwater.

Were you surprised by some of the creatures and organisms on display?

I’ve been working in television production a long time, and I learn something new every day through the shows on which I work. Each episode had a creature and/or behavior that I wasn’t aware of before, and what’s really great about this WILD DEEP series is that for every new thing we, as humans, become aware of in regards to ocean wildlife, several more mysteries and questions arise. There’s still so much more for us to discover in the depths of the ocean.

Is there one particular favorite?

I really love all the whales and the manta rays. My daughter is a big fan of the Yellow Boxfish, which she likened to Pac Man.

How many people does it take to put a project like this together?

This series was an acquisition for Animal Planet U.S. Tailoring it for air in the U.S. was a real team effort. I hired a researcher and worked closely with a post-production coordinator, two video editors and two audio engineers. I also hired an American voice to narrate.

What do you think it is about the ocean that so entrances us as TV viewers?

As I mentioned before, the ocean still remains a mystery to us. It’s so vast and deep that it is both fearsome and fascinating, as well as strikingly beautiful. There’s this intrinsic desire to understand our world, and I think that’s what keeps us so intrigued by the planet’s oceans.

What are you hoping viewers take from Wild Deep? Would you call it educational?

I hope viewers are both entertained and amazed by what they learn from WILD DEEP. It gives viewers a quick, intimate look into some of the Earth’s most amazing underwater sites.
