REVIEW: ‘Agatha Christie’ documentaries from PBS now on DVD

A new DVD from PBS compiles two similar documentaries into one literary-minded collection. Inside the Mind of Agatha Christie takes a deep dive into the personal and professional life of the famed British writer, while Agatha Christie’s England looks at the various locations throughout the country that are featured in her writing and influenced her life in some way.
Together, these two TV programs are must-see specials for fans of Christie, perhaps the best-selling author of all time. Her murder mystery stories, including beloved series featuring Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, were gobbled up in the 20th century and continue to be literary draws in the 21st. Her play, The Mousetrap, recently reopened in London’s West End and continues to be the longest-running play of all time.
Interestingly, Christie was averse to granting interviews while she was alive, so much of the content in these two documentaries comes from scholars and a couple family members. The writing, of course, also takes center stage, and the narration has access to some of her letters and correspondences.
Perhaps the greatest treat for uber-fans of Christie is the chance to hear stories of her childhood home (now demolished) and the homes she resided in throughout her life. There is much archival footage sprinkled throughout the films.
This reviewer did find that there was enough content shared between the two documentaries that some of the stories felt redundant. Although both are worthy of watching, if pressed for time, audience members can choose one of the 45-minute films, and Agatha Christie’s England seemed more focused. Special kudos to Samantha Bond for her effective narration.
It is wonderful to head back in time to understand and appreciate the genius of this top mystery writer.
