Mayve, the alternative pop band from Long Island, New York, recently released the second single in their three-single project this year. “Slide” is a much darker tune for the band, especially when compared to previous single “Head High.”

They pull their sounds from many influences in the 1970s and 1980s, always keeping in mind that they are plying the waters in the 21st century. The resulting songs over the band’s tenure are simultaneously catchy, brooding and popping.

Recently Hollywood Soapbox exchanged emails with Mayve, who decided to collectively answer as a band. Questions and answers have been slightly edited for style.

What can fans expect from your new song ‘Slide’?

If you’ve been following us from our first record you’ll hear a much darker turn in ‘Slide.’ We always like to approach each song giving it its own identity. I like to think of that as the band’s maturity. We continue to create because we are trying to chase a particular sound in our heads. With each song, the band’s overall style becomes a little more defined. We’re beginning to fall down a rabbit hole of blending electronic elements with our indie roots. ‘Slide’ is my favorite song of ours at the moment. If you’re a fan who’s just joining us, welcome.

How would you define the sound of Mayve?

We want our voice, sound and influence to live on the dividing line of light and dark, speaking real emotions and confusing times on top of an otherwise uplifting soundtrack.

How difficult is the music industry and getting your music out to an audience?

Nowadays, it’s easier than ever to get your music out into the world. It’s important though to be creative on how you reveal your art to others. I think if you’re a good artist creating from an honest place, an audience will find you.

Who were some of your musical influences growing up?

Our musical taste is all over the place. Personally, when I was little, it was just whatever was on the radio. It wasn’t until I was about 11 years old when I started to dive into my parent’s music collection and find what I really liked. My parents were teenagers through the ’80s, so they had a lot of great records from Def Leppard, Phil Collins, Fleetwood Mac, Madonna, Depeche Mode, etc. These records shaped my musical pallet and are still ones I listen to today.

What’s the future hold for the band?

We have more music coming out this year. Follow @mayvemusic for updates.
