MUSIC NEWS: NOLA musicians head north for concerts in NYC area
The New York City region has always had a good musical relationship with the great city of New Orleans. The jazz, blues and funk bands who call the Crescent City home frequently travel up north to New Jersey, New York and Connecticut for concerts. Sometimes, an individual band or musician can make the trek several times per calendar year.
Here’s a helpful summary of the tours coming to tri-state area.
Galactic, the famous funk band, will celebrate their latest release, Into the Deep, with several area concerts in 2016. Most prominent among the offerings is a March 26 gig at Terminal 5 on the westside of Manhattan. Philadelphia, Boston and Fairfield, Conn., for those fans wanting to travel a little farther, will also offer dates.
Marc Broussard, the soul singer behind the hit song “Home,” will play New York City’s City Winery tonight, Oct. 31. He returns to the venue twice more over the next two months. On Nov. 28, he’ll play two sets with a collective known as Southern Soul Assembly. His colleague on stage that night will be Anders Osborne, JJ Grey and Luther Dickinson. On Dec. 15, he’ll return once again, this time for a holiday concert at City Winery. No doubt he’ll play some tracks off his new Christmas-themed album, Magnolias & Misletoe. Connecticut fans can check out Broussard Sunday, Nov. 1 at the Warehouse in Fairfield; or check out the Southern Soul Assembly at the same venue, Nov. 29.
Osborne, the soul rocker who defies genre, will not only play with the Southern Soul Assembly in November. He plays two dates, Dec. 11-12, at the Brooklyn Bowl. The latter date also features Dangermuffin. The singer has also recently announced an expansive 2016 tour, which includes dates in Port Chester, N.Y. (Feb. 26). The Joe Krown Trio, featuring Krown, Walter “Wolfman” Washington and Russell Batiste Jr., heads to New York’s Cutting Room Nov. 6 and The Saint in Asbury Park, N.J., on Nov. 7. New Haven, Conn., fans can also catch them at Cafe Nine on Nov. 11. Krown recently talked with Hollywood Soapbox, and the interview will be posted soon.
Dumpstaphunk, with Ivan Neville on Hammond B3 keys, will bring the funk to the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, N.Y., for an annual pre-Thanksgiving concert with Fishbone and special guest Cyril Neville. They will likely play songs off their latest release, Dirty Word.
Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, one of the most successful acts out of NOLA, will play the coveted New Year’s Eve spot at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y. If the ticket price is too much, check them out a day earlier for a little cheaper. They will be fresh off a European tour with the Foo Fighters.
Rebirth Brass Band, featuring Keith Frazier, will offer two sets at the Highline Ballroom in New York on Dec. 30. Check the brass band out for some funky music. Close your eyes, and it will feel like the Maple Leaf in NOLA on a Tuesday night. If Manhattan doesn’t work out, check them out a day earlier at the new Hall at MP in Brooklyn.
The Revivalists, with the infectious new song “Keep Going,” are on tour, plus lead singer David Shaw will offer a solo show at City Winery on Dec. 26. Note: The Revivalists’ date in Fairfield, Conn., on Nov. 8 is currently sold out.
Terence Blanchard will bring his E-Collective to New York’s Blue Note, Nov. 26-29. They will offer songs from their new album, Breathless. Recently, Hollywood Soapbox talked with Blanchard about the project. Expect to read the story soon.
Other concerts include Allen Toussaint at City Winery Nov. 29; Jon Cleary will join John Scofield at B.B. King’s Blues Club & Grill on 42nd Street Dec. 7; the Dirty Dozen Brass Band will join the Blind Boys of Alabama at the Tarrytown Music Hall in Tarrytown, N.Y., Jan. 15.; Shannon Powell will perform at the Blue Note ahead of Mardi Gras in February; Powell will stick around for some midweek performances with Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers; Glen David Andrews will co-headline with the New Orleans Suspects Jan. 21 at the Cutting Room; and Samantha Fish follows a couple of weeks later with her own gig at the Cutting Room (Feb. 13).
